Took as many photos as I could, even from the inside. So didn't do nothing with the photos I took from this epic spot (because I needed to setup my work station). So I finally got my area organized and started to edit the photos I took. I was amazed by the details and the final outcome. But something was bothering me, so I decided to look up this location.
Guess what I found? Absolutely nada (nothing). I even searched the Kentucky Digital Library which it only came with tax and useless info. Kept searching, even my wife pitched in. She couldn't believe it either that nothing was posted about this abandoned sanctuary. Told the wife "Babe let's take a ride". by the way cold + cloudy rainy weather = bundle up like a bear because it's going to be freezing. Drove to the location and took a couple of more shots.
He then tells me "Well since then it has been abandoned and its been there. People say it's haunted and they see things. But I have never seen anything." I replied "Well thank you sir for the information. You might see me around town taking more photos and gathering more info". Shook his hand and drove to the house in front of the abandoned church. The lady at the resident said that she has lived in that house for more than 12 years and it has been abandoned. And that she gets an eerie sensation from that place and that she hasn't step foot in that place. But she does see a lot of people taking pictures and then they leave and never come back.
Have to say that I will continue to search and see what happen to this church. I have added a couple of photos I took from the location to my Facebook page, click on the link BoriPhotography Galleria. And a screen shot from http://www.nonprofitfacts.com.

i was just there tonight doing a photoshoot....the photographer chose the location. i have to admit i thought it would be neat to take my photos at an old church but on the steps of the church right next to where she had me sit was a voodoo looking doll ripped in half...i decided to look further into this abandoned church and ran across your blog. I wonder why the elders were dying and no one kept the church up? And its weird that i can't find anything else on the internet...

ReplyDeleteThis church was a precious Church in our community.this is the place where I learned how to play the piano and play the piano for this church for about seven years as a child. My mother was the pastor of this church for 6 years. Before it was a church it was some women's School in the 1800's. many of the members who have died off a matter fact I'm going to attend one of those members funerals today. In the 1990s it underwent some renovation and some revival. the congregation grew from three people to 30 people during this era. The renovation was funded by some grant money from the Kentucky heritage society. However as another decade went by the congregation was closed by the Methodist Church. The few members that were left scattered to surrounding churches. The lot was sold. I hate to see properties owned by African-Americans being sold especially in rural communities. But it was a great place bustling with a lot of culture and history and the spirit of God. In the 40s 50s and 60s I understand that tent revivals with take place at this spot all Summer Long. There was even an old cook house and kitchen behind the church where meals were sold throughout the summer during the time of the revivals.my great-grandmother who was also a musician used to play the piano at these revivals. Remember before my mother pastor this church be itlooked abandoned even then. Man by the name of John Carter pastor the church then. I was scared to go in as a young child. But as time went by became a place that I love. Stop by and took some pictures for my car I almost could hear the old members singing and praising God through the grass. This church building its abandon it is old but it still stands!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting! Is your name Rev. Ben Lewis? If so, I read an article about your mother Rev. Lisa Lewis-Balboa (who preached there at Lane CME for 6 years-so it adds up). Was really interested about the building & its history. I am a teacher & study African American history & oppression, so was even more interested obviously when I learned a little bit more about the church's history from these two articles: https://www.kentonlibrary.org/genealogy/regional-history/covington/austinburg/lane-chapel-c-m-e

Then I saw this blog & your comment. Thank you for adding even more of a story to a building with such a rich history & culture. Hate to see them abandoned-but especially, as you said, an African American owned & operated property.
Best Regards,
Ms. Jessica Hanson
When I feel like a need a little more from God I drive to this church. I have had some of the most powerful worship experiences in front of this church, from my car. For those who were members here, the ancestors of this church, in 2023, I still seek this building to hear a word from the Lord!
